SYMOCLAV-DUO DRY SYRUP
AMOXICILLIN AND POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE ORAL SUSPENSION
Each 5mL of Symoclav-Duo Dry syrup consists of Amoxicillin trihydrate (equivalent to amoxicillin) 400mg and diluted potassium clavulanate IP (equivalent to clavulanic acid) 57mg.
DESCRIPTION
Symoclav-Duo Dry syrup is a potent antibiotic combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity, while clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor whose prime function is to prevent the enzymatic degradation of amoxicillin by beta-lactamases present in the bacterial cell wall.
Like other beta-lactam antibiotics, amoxicillin works by inhibiting the cell wall synthesis in bacteria. Amoxicillin interferes with the transpeptidation step, which is the last step of peptidoglycan synthesis and prevents the cross-linking reaction. This cross-linking is crucial for the maintenance of cellular integrity in bacteria. Lack of cross-linkage in the cell wall increases the permeability and eventually leads to the death of the bacterial cells.
Clavulanic acid’s role in this combination is to protect the antibiotic activity of amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is highly susceptible to beta-lactamases and cephalosporinases activity; thus, it has to be administered in combination with clavulanic acid, which will bind to the beta-lactamases and let amoxicillin perform its activity.
