MECHANISM OF ACTION
- Sodium valproate is an anti-convulsant.
- The most likely mode of action for sodium valproate is potentiation of the inhibitory action of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) through an action on the further synthesis or further metabolism of GABA.
INDICATIONS
- Use as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the management of complex partial seizures and simple or complex absence seizures.
- Adjunctive therapy in the management of multiple seizure types that include absence seizures.
- Prophylaxis of migraine headaches.
- Acute management of mania associated with bipolar disorder.
